Worldly Water Related Diseases & Deaths

Worldly Water Related Diseases & Deaths

There are a few facts that most people know about water, such as approximately 70% of the adult human body is made up of water. Then, there’s the one we all should have learned in grade school, about ¾ of the Earth’s surface is composed of water. But there are many more facts, most not as fun that the majority of the human population does not know about water.

For instance, are you aware that 80% of illnesses in developed countries are correlated to the poor sanitation of their water sources?

Did you know that every sixty seconds a child somewhere in the world dies from a water related disease?

How about that one in every nine people does not have access to clean drinking water?

No? Don’t feel bad, most people don’t. However, that doesn’t mean the statistics aren’t true. The lack of sanitary water for drinking and hygienic purposes is the leading cause of infection throughout the entire world. In addition, the availability of clean water in a country is directly related to the health, education and poverty of its residents.

Although the United States is not one of the countries suffering from a lack of sanitary water, the majority of its citizens do obtain their drinking water from public sources. The United States has implemented effective filtration systems that rid the water of the most bacteria and other harmful organisms, but without private water source it is impossible to ensure that the water you and your family ingest is 100% pure. Avoid Water Contamination in Your Home

In 2010, Nashville experiences an unlikely yet extremely devastating natural disaster, the infamous flood. Hundreds, even thousands of families in Williamson, Davidson a, Rutherford and other counties in Tennessee were uprooted from their homes. Not inches, but feet of water covered the roads, flooded the sewer system. Then it started to get scary, families; basements were drowning in water within a few days. Mothers and fathers did their best to reassure their little ones that everything was fine as the water climbed higher and higher, destroying furniture, floors, and other expensive belongings in its path. By the end of the week some families actually had to use canoes to gain access to the second story of their homes. They loaded the small boats, over countless trips with as many clothes, and personal belongings as possible; trying to salvage what was left of their tangible memories.
Prior to this unexpected event, Nashville had never experienced flooding. Children of all ages were mesmerized at first at the height of the water covering the roads. They even got a bit excited because the flood led to a day or two of school closings, but this fascination was short lived. The kids were actually swimming in the flooding waters with no knowledge that the sewer systems had actually overflowed and they were swimming in human waste! Animals were drinking from the overflowing dirty water, causing many to come down with strange illnesses. Some beloved family pets even died from water poisoning causing disrupted families even more grief.
Even worse than the furry friends that were affected by the strange tragedy, most of the drinking systems in Williamson and Davidson County were contaminated with the sewer water as well. The water was filtered enough so that it didn’t look like there were any bacteria in their water, when in actuality it was worse than actually taking a sip from your toilet bowl. Hundreds of people became violently ill. People actually became afraid to drink the water in their sinks at home. They rushed to any grocery store, gas station, and even fast food restaurants where they could buy bottled water to stock up. Tennessee was in a state of panic with no idea when their water sources would be clean and safe to drink or use again.
When the rain finally stopped and the water began to recede, Nashville was left in a state of devastating destruction.
